About avorz — the news wire, in the order it happened

What this is

avorz publishes a single chronological feed of news items. There is no front page in the traditional sense: no lead story, no story of the day, no headline set in larger type because an editor considered it more important. Items are the same size and appear in the order they were filed.

The name is abstract on purpose. It promises nothing about coverage, tone or allegiance, which is the position the publication takes: a neutral utility rather than a title with a voice.

Why chronology

Ranking a feed means someone decides what you see first. That decision is either editorial, in which case it carries a view, or algorithmic, in which case it carries your past behaviour back to you. Time carries neither. It is the one ordering principle that produces the same page for every reader.

The cost is real: important items sit next to minor ones and you have to read past things you do not need. The filters exist to narrow the stream — by desk, topic, region and status — but they never reorder it.

What avorz — the news wire, in the order it happened does not do

These are constraints on the product, not features we have yet to build.

• No personalised feed and no recommendations. Signed in or out, the wire is identical.
• No advertising and no sponsored items anywhere in the product.
• No paywall, no metering, no subscriber-only material.
• No comments, and no social sign-in.
• No images in the feed. The wire is text; charts appear only where an item is about numbers.
• No push alerts competing for attention. Breaking status is a label, not an interruption.

Filing and revision

Every item carries the time it was filed. When facts change, the item is revised in place rather than replaced or reissued: the change appears inside the text with its own timestamp, and the full revision history sits at the foot of the item. Nothing is edited silently.

Corrections of fact are handled separately from revisions: they are flagged on the item and never folded into a revision. The standards we file against are set out in /editorial-standards/, and the sourcing practice in /how-we-report/.

A staffed newsroom filing around the clock across every time zone the desks cover. Items are filed under the desk, not under a byline: the wire attributes to the newsroom, and named credit appears only where an item rests on one reporter's original work.
