Key participants from the financial technology sector, including top representatives from G-Xchange, Maya Bank, and Tala, discussed the need for balanced regulatory frameworks. They highlighted that such regulations must promote financial inclusion, secure digital transactions, and enable sustained sector expansion.

A prominent theme was the call for a fair competitive landscape. A senior executive from G-Xchange stressed that regulations should allow firms to compete based on value, innovation, and security, ensuring fair pricing. This perspective was echoed by other panelists advocating for policies that shield consumers without hindering technological progress.

Ferrer from Tala underscored that co-regulation driven by consumer needs is essential to balance financial inclusion with investment sustainability. The discussion revealed a consensus that existing regulations often lag behind technological advances, necessitating proactive policy reform.

The summit also addressed service affordability, citing recent moves by GCash to lower transfer fees to P10 under the BSP’s initiative to promote digital payments. Panelists agreed that affordability must be balanced with financial sustainability, which allows fintech firms to invest in vital security and technological upgrades.

Differences between traditional banking and fintech business models were also discussed. While banks primarily earn through lending activities, fintech firms mainly operate revenue streams from payment services, which fund their ongoing innovation efforts. Dapul, from GCash, noted that digital payments are key to delivering reliable, accessible financial services, especially for low-income and unbanked populations.

Initiatives like streamlined onboarding and digital ID verification are making financial inclusion more attainable. GCash’s role as a regional facilitator during the ASEAN Summit, including seamless cashless payments for delegates, exemplifies fintech's potential to enhance cross-border digital connectivity.

As the sector pushes for forward-looking regulations, the emphasis remains on creating a safe, inclusive, and innovative financial landscape. The summit's discussions highlight a commitment to establishing legislative frameworks that balance growth with consumer and investor protections, aiming to foster a robust digital economy across ASEAN.
