How hiring works
What we can state now
These hold for every posting, so they are worth reading before one appears rather than after.
- The salary range is in the posting. There is no negotiation about whether it will be disclosed.
- The newsroom works across time zones rather than from one place; postings state the hours a role must cover, not the city it must sit in.
- Wire work includes nights and weekends on rotation. Postings say which rotation applies.
- Reporters may not hold positions in the companies or instruments their desk covers — see /editorial-standards/, clause 7.1.
- No unpaid trials, no speculative assignments, and no work sample that could be published.
Speculative applications
We do not keep a file of unsolicited applications. Holding a CV for a year and then not looking at it helps nobody, so we would rather tell you plainly than let you assume otherwise.
