Nimiq, a blockchain platform focused on integrating cryptocurrency payments into everyday apps, has announced its Mini Apps Framework offering zero percent commission fees. The initiative aims to attract developers by providing a low-cost alternative to traditional app stores, which often charge high commissions.
The company has opened the second round of its Mini Apps Competition, running from August 24 to September 18. Developers can submit open-source Mini Apps designed for Nimiq Pay with the chance to win part of a $17,000 prize pool. The first cycle saw 62 submissions, indicating growing interest in the framework.
Inspired by WeChat’s mini programs, the Nimiq framework enables developers to create lightweight web applications hosted on their own infrastructure. Nimiq manages payment wallets, payment rails, and audience engagement, allowing developers full ownership and control over their applications and revenue. This approach aims to reduce barriers common in traditional app platforms.
The move comes amid ongoing shifts in the global app economy, notably changes in Apple’s commission policies. Historically charging 30%, Apple has reduced its fees for smaller developers since 2020 and faces increasing pressure from regulatory bodies, such as the European Digital Markets Act, which has led to lower fees and alternative payment considerations.
Nimiq’s framework supports payments in stablecoins like USDT and offers full-stack tools to streamline app deployment. Its open-source model fosters community participation and transparency, further encouraging innovation.
The success of the initial competition highlights developer interest in alternatives to legacy app stores. As market dynamics evolve, Nimiq aims to reshape the app development and monetization landscape, emphasizing lower fees, ownership rights, and integrated cryptocurrency payments.
